Pizza Delivery

This was my first purchase I’ve had to make for a mystery shop. I had to order a pizza online. I had read the instructions pretty thoroughly as this was the first one for this company. It involved assessing things such as the website, how long it took to deliver, the friendliness of the delivery driver, his uniform, any greeting/parting comments and then the quality of the pizza. Now for some reason after reading the instructions, I was expecting a full on conversation with the delivery person. Although having done a delivery job myself, I know you don’t usually hang around.

When the pizza arrived, I noted the time and opened the door. There was a guy stood there, he gave me a receipt, shoved the pizza into my hand and went “OK?” then went and got back in his car. I had at most 10 seconds to get all the information I required. In hindsight maybe it would have been better to pay by cash so he would have had to been there longer and I could have assessed his uniform and everything else. The instructions were adamant I had to get the delivery persons name. However he wasn’t wearing a badge and it didn’t have his name on the receipt so I’m actually wondering if they’re going to pay me at all now. Even though there wasn’t much I could have done apart from ask him his name which then makes it obvious I’m a mystery shopper. They had better pay me because the order cost £15 and they’re only paying me £12.50 which I don’t mind as it means I only paid £2.50 for the pizza. But if they decide not to pay me then I’m going to be out of pocket and had to spend over an hour reading the instructions and filling in the report. Time will tell and yes the pizza was nice.

Contact Lens Enquiry

Got the car back from the garage yesterday so went and completed the other two shops today. It was the same deal as the one I did Wednesday. I had to go in and make an enquiry about wearing contact lenses. The first one I did went well and the guy gave me all the information that was required. The second store went pretty well but the lady wasn’t as helpful as the other two although she still gave me most of the information. I quite like doing the mystery shops where I have to just go in and make enquiries, it’s pretty straight forward. I also heard back from the company about doing the shop before the stores name changed. They informed me I no longer have to do it, although the company are going to pay me half (£4) for attempting to do it, which I guess is better than actually having to do the shop and filling out the report!

Car Trouble

Today was the first time I was going to attempt to do more than one mystery shop in a single day. The plan was to do three opticians where I had to go in to each of them and make an enquiry about wearing contact lenses. I didn’t think it would be much of a problem as the other two mystery shops I’ve done doesn’t take very long. The first one went smoothly, the staff member pretty much ticked all the boxes and gave me all the information she was supposed to. I jumped in the car to drive to the next one and half way there I noticed smoke coming out of the engine. I pulled over and called my parents as my dad is quite handy with this sort of thing. He came out and noticed that there was a leak in one of the pipes so drove it to a garage. One of these days I’m going to do a mystery shop and nothing will go wrong! Hopefully I will get the car back by the end of the week to complete the other two shops. Still haven’t heard about the mystery shop I was supposed to do last week so I’m assuming the company doesn’t need it done anymore.

Name of the shop changed!

This week I was supposed to do my third mystery shop in a local convenience store. However when I went to do it on Monday they were renovating the store. I went back a few days later only to find out that the store had been converted into a shop with a different name! What were the chances of that happening on the exact day I was supposed to do a mystery shop? I contacted the mystery shopping company and they said they would get back to me if they still wanted me to do it yesterday. They didn’t. Today I got a message from them saying that I hadn’t submitted the report and I had until the end of the day to submit it, even though they hadn’t told me to go ahead and do it! I will wait and see if they contact me again next week. So far I’ve had three mystery shops to do. The first one went well. The second one I couldn’t find the place and now this one’s changed the name of the shop! It started off easy enough but hasn’t stayed that way.

Couldn’t find the shop!

My second mystery shop didn’t go quite as smoothly as the first one because I couldn’t even find the thing I was supposed to be pretending to buying. My mystery shopping brief said that I was supposed to find a member of staff in the Hallett Retail department of a Debenhams store and ask them for assistance in purchasing a top for a night out. It was clear on the brief that I had to get assistance from a member of staff who worked on that department and not a Debenhams member of staff.

So my first job was to locate the department I was supposed to be mystery shopping. I went into the Debenhams store and spent 20 minutes looking for it. When I couldn’t find the department I asked three members of staff if they could point me in the direction of the Hallett Retail department, but none of them had even heard of it. I did another lap of the menswear section and was beginning to think that I was giving away the fact that I was the mystery shopper. So by this point I was convinced it didn’t exist and maybe this was some sort of test they send all new recruits on to make sure you are actually doing the mystery shop. I went outside the shop and rang the mystery shopping company. I told them that I couldn’t find the Hallett Retail department and the lady on the phone explained that it wasn’t a department, but actually a range of clothes with several different brands I had to find. I looked back at my brief and saw six brands I had never heard of before. None of which I had noticed in the store the first time, but I went back in anyway.

After another couple of laps of the menswear department, saw all the brands I recognised such as Levi’s, Tommy Hillfiger but none of the ones I was looking for. Just as I was about to give up I noticed three clothes stands with emo T-Shirts on. I couldn’t believe the whole time I had been looking for Shirts you would wear on a night out and there was these emo T-Shirts I would never wear on a night out. I had a look around and there was only one staff member in the department. I went up to her and said “I was hoping you can help me, I’m looking for a top for a night out”. As soon as I said it she smiled a little. Now maybe its something about the nature of this job but I was sure she knew I was the mystery shopper.

She started selecting tops she thought would suit me just like it said she was supposed to on the mystery shoppers brief. She took me to the changing room to let me try them on and waited outside the whole time giving me her opinion of what she thought looked best, then went back and changed the ones that didn’t fit. I’m pretty sure she knew I was the mystery shopper and if she didn’t, she certainly would have after I had to make an excuse to leave without buying anything, even though I’d spent about half an hour trying on all the different shirts. However the one thing I did learn from this was that it probably wasn’t worth all the effort and time it took for £12. It would have been ok had I not spent half the time unable to find what I was looking for and the fact that I had to drive and pay for parking then get stuck in rush hour as well. All in all though it was a successful mystery shop and the girl got a glowing report from me.
